Where should I store a fire extinguisher in my home?

Fire extinguishers should be kept in a highly visible, easily accessible area. Ideally they would be mounted in a quick release bracket. Check the manufactures instructions for mounting information.

 

What is the correct method to use a fire extinguisher?

The PASS method. Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle low at the base of the fire, Squeeze the trigger and Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire.

 

Where should smoke alarms be installed in my home?

At least one on every level of the house and outside each sleeping area. They should be mounted on the ceiling or high on the wall, follow manufacturer's instructions for installation. Avoid putting smoke alarms too close to bathrooms, windows, ceiling fans or cooking appliances.

 

What is the expected life span of a new smoke alarm?

Most smoke alarms of today have a life span of 8 to 10 years. It should be replaced then even if it appears to be working fine. Most manufacturers will have the expected life span written on the packaging.

Whenever solid fuel burning appliances are used in the home such as a propane fireplace, woodstove, kerosene heater, water boilers, fuel fired dryers etc, a carbon monoxide detector should be installed. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

 

What are the proper clearances and how do I properly install a woodstove?

First of all the woodstove should bear the label of an approved and certified testing agency. If it does not bear such a label, it is not permitted to be used. Regarding the installation and maintaining the proper clearances, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

 

What size should windows be for a bedroom in an existing residential dwelling?

The minimum opening have a width not less than 20 inches and a height not less than 24 inches. The bottom of the opening should not be higher than 44 inches from the floor.

 

What are the procedures for developing an evacuation plan?

They may be obtained by contacting the Fire Prevention Division Monday to Friday, 8:00 - 4:30 or in conjunction with this an Inspector may be able to visit the property for an on site consult and recommendations forwarded regarding the various aspects of an agency's respective building.

 

Do I need a permit to have a fire in an out door fireplace?

Check with your municipality for by-laws regarding this. Some city and towns have specific regulations regarding the use of outdoor fire places within their boundaries.
