MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the SJRFD web page. The SJRFD is located on the most easterly point of land in North America, serves a population of 150,000 people and provides backup services to 6 surrounding Volunteer and Composite Fire Departments.
The St. John’s Fire Department (SJFD) came into existence immediately after the Great Fire of 1892 and was provincially owned and operated. In 1992 this Department was transferred to the City of St. John’s to provide emergency protection to the Cities of St. John’s and Mount Pearl and subsequently became known as the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD).
We value the history and tradition of the SJRFD, an Organization built on the past of those now retired. Just as important we value the commitment of our men and women who are current with the Department, who will share the responsibility of shaping our future.
While there still remains to be many areas of historic architecture within the Region, the SJRFD of today is a modern and very progressive Department that is committed to protect the lives and property of Citizens which we serve. The men and women of the SJRFD provide these services in a very well trained and professional manner and are to be commended for this, given some of the inherent challenges faced within North America’s oldest City.
Thanks for visiting our web page! If you are ever visiting the Region we encourage you to stop by and meet our staff and tour our equipment and facilities.
Michael J. Dwyer, P. Eng
Director of Regional Fire Services (Fire Chief)
